The birth of BioFilm Technologies and the “ring test”.
BioFilm Technologies was created in 2005.
At that time, Thierry Bernardi was working on another molecular biology project, a small DNA extraction robot called “gene washer.” While using magnetic microbeads, he invented the “ring test,” the basis of BioFilm Technologies.
Thierry’s idea was to use the beads to show bacteria that stick on a surface.
Bacteria that stick to and grow on a surface are called “biofilms”. Until then, very few people knew how to study biofilms, simply because no one had ever found an easy way to extract and manipulate that sticky matter with lab robots.
Thierry Bernardi and co-founder (and main investor) Nicolas Bara quickly understood the usefulness of this emerging technology that enables to study the formation of bacterial biofilms in a standard, simple, inexpensive, quick, and robotized way.
Over the last 15 years, the technology has evolved into a mature product
BioFilm Technologies, our holding company based in Luxemburg, has 10 international patents in its portfolio.
BioFilm Control, the diagnostic branch of BioFilm Technologies, is ISO certified, which is rare among biotech startups. It is currently preparing application for CE Marking and Social Security reimbursement in France and Europe.
BioFilm Pharma, the drug branch of BioFilm Technoloiges, is currently exploring 3 Hit Molecules with strong potential action for Diabetic Foot Ulcer and Cystic Fibrosis (Mucovisidosis)
With more than 10 pure anti-biofilm agents, BioFilm Technologies is one of the premier go-to companies when it comes to fighting antimicrobial resistance.
